Akkarai Sisters

Akkarai Sisters, S. Subhalakshmi and S. Sornalatha, are distinguished Indian musicians renowned for their mastery in both vocal and violin performances within the Carnatic tradition. Born into a musically rich lineage in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, their grandfather, Suchindram S. P. Sivasubramaniam, was a celebrated vocalist, violinist, and composer, while their grandmother, R. Sornambal, excelled as a music teacher and Harikatha exponent. Under the tutelage of their father, Akkarai S. Swamynathan, a respected violinist and teacher, the sisters commenced their musical journey early, with Subhalakshmi performing publicly by the age of four. Their rigorous training encompassed both vocal and violin disciplines, including exposure to Hindustani classical music during their time in Delhi, which enriched their adaptability to various musical styles.

Throughout their careers, the Akkarai Sisters have garnered numerous accolades, reflecting their exceptional talent and contributions to Indian classical music. Subhalakshmi received the Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Puraskar from the President of India at the age of thirteen, and both sisters have been honored with awards such as the 'Kalaimamani' by the Tamil Nadu State Government and the 'Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Award.' Their international presence is notable, with performances across Asia, North America, Europe, Oceania, and Africa, showcasing the rich heritage of Carnatic music to diverse audiences worldwide. In addition to their performances, Sornalatha has made significant contributions as a composer, creating works in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit, and Hindi that are celebrated for their intricate interplay of melody and rhythm.
